As Xavier battles the alien consciousness in his mind, he clings to memories of his past. Twenty years ago, Xavier helped a traumatized war victim, Gabrielle Haller, out of a catatonic state. Xavier also meets a young Magneto and they become good friend despite a clash in their philosophies. However, Baron Strucker kidnaps Gabrielle and she leads him and his newly formed Hydra to a stash of Nazi gold. Xavier and Magneto rescue her and keep the gold out of Strucker's hands. These memories allow Xavier to overpower the alien consciousness and awaken from his coma. A Sh'iar celebration takes place to honour the X-Men for Lilandra's safety. Deathbird delivers the X-Men to the Brood who take them to their home world and infected them with their Queen's eggs. Wolverine escapes and learns of his horrible fate. Fortunately, his adamantium skeleton and healing factor destroy the egg as it attempted to metamorphose. |

Wolverine sets out to rescue the X-Men even though he believes that they're as good as dead since they've also been infected with the Brood Queen's eggs. He rescues Carol Danvers who has had a strange battery of experiments run on her. They free the others, but Wolverine doesn't tell them of their fate. They escape the Brood home world, but are being pursued. Jay's Notes:

Thanks to Carol Danvers' new powers, the X-Men escape the Brood's half-hearted pursuit (since they didn't want to risk harming the eggs). Storm is overwhelmed by her egg's birthing pains and flees the ship in an escape pod. Wolverine tells the X-Men the truth and Carol who's adopted the name Binary sets off to destroy the Brood's home world. Jay's Notes:

Storm is overwhelmed by her Brood egg, but she's saved when she's merged with one of the mysterious space creatures called the Acanti. She rejoins the X-Men who each have come to grips with the fact that they're going to die. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Professor X decides to form the New Mutants. |

Binary leads the attack against the Brood home world. Through Storm's link with the Acanti, she learns of their enslavement by the Brood and that the X-Men can help secure their freedom. The X-Men then attack the Brood in a suicide run. The X-Men are successful at freeing the Acanti's Prophet-Singer's soul and are cured of the Brood Queen's eggs. However, they learn that the last of the Brood Queen's offsprings lies within Professor X. Jay's Notes:

The X-Men return to Earth and make their way through the New Mutants to reach Professor X, who has metamorphosed in a young brood queen. The X-Men take down the brood queen, but Xavier's mind fights on. The StarJammers' medical facilities clone Professor X's body and transfer his mind. In his new body, Professor X can now walk. Once he's recovered, he decides that Kitty will leave the X-Men to join the New Mutants. |

Kitty is rather upset about Xavier's decision to demote her. After a bit of moapping and complaining she sets out to prove him wrong. She meets up with the dragon Lockheed who helped in issue #166 just in time to battle several Sidri drones left over from issue #154. Professor X is suitable impressed an allows her to stay with the X-Men. Meanwhile in Alaska, Scott visits his newly discovered grandparents and meets a young redhead named Madelyne Pryor, who looks exactly like Jean. Jay's Notes:

The Angel is kidnapped by a mysterious creature and the X-Men investigate. Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Kitty descent into the New York City underground an discover a large group of mutants called the Morlocks living there. Their leader, Callisto, ordered the Angel's kidnapping. Unfortunately, the X-Men are overwhelmed by the Morlocks and captured. Kitty, touched by a mutant named Plague, falls severly ill, but is nursed by Caliban (see X-Men #148). |

Caliban pleads for the lives of the X-Men, but Calisto will hear nothing of it. Storm decides to challange Callisto to a personal dual. The dual is fierce and Storm win stabbing Calisto in the heart. Thankfully, the Morlock healer was on hand and saved her life. Storm, now leader of the Morlock, collect Angel and take her X-Men home. Meanwhile in Alaska, Scott gets to known Madelyn better and decides to reveal his mutant power to her. |
