Synopsis:
In a bleak future controlled by the mutant-hunting Sentinels, the remaining X-Men send Kitty's mind back into her past body in hopes of preventing this future from becoming reality. Kitty convinces the X-Men to rush to Washington where Professor X and Senator Kelly will presumably be killed. The New Brotherhood of Evil Mutants break up the Senate hearing and attempt to kill Senator Kelly.

  • First appearence of Rachel Summers (Pheonix II).
  • First appearence of the new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (Mystique, Destiny, Blob, Avalanche, and Pyro).

Synopsis:
The X-Men defend Senator Kelly from the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. In the future, the X-Men fall before the might of the Sentinels. Fortunately in the present, the X-Men prevent Kelly from being killed and defeated the Brotherhood.

  • Hints are dropped about Mystique's possible connection to Nightcrawler.

Synopsis:
Kitty is left alone at the mansion on New Year's Eve when one of the N'Garai demons decides to visit. Kitty manages to stay out of the demon's reach and leads it through the Danger Room. Unfortunately, the demon survives and continues to pursue her. She leads it to the hanger and finally destroys it using the blackbird's engine thrust.

Jay's Notes:

  • A well-executed Kitty Pryde versus Alien.
  • Byrne and Austin resign after this issue. The letter page include a nice write up by Claremont praising his former co-workers.

Synopsis:
On the west coast of Florida, Scott Summers spends some time as a crew member of a fishing boat. He accompanies the captain, a beautiful young woman named Lee Forrester, to visit her father. Unfortunately, an emotion manipulating demon called D'spayre has killed her father. Scott confronts this demon and has to face his most emotionally painful memories. Scott overcomes his fears and with the help of the Man Thing, he defeats D'spayre.

Synopsis:
The X-Men's loved ones have been kidnapped by Miss Locke, the assassin Arcade's hench woman. It seems that Doom, insulted by Arcade, decided to take Arcade prisoner, and Miss Locke wants the X-Men to rescue him. Professor X summons the reserve X-Men (Polaris, Havok, Banshee, and Ice Man). The reserve X-Men are assigned to penetrate Murderworld and free the X-Men's loved ones. Meanwhile, the main team confronts Dr. Doom and are defeated.


June 1981

Synopsis:
Dr. Doom places the X-Men into tailor-made death traps to test the extent of their powers. Meanwhile, the reserve X-Men invade Murderworld and quickly learn that it lives up to its name. They survive despite Miss Locke's best attempts. They defeat Locke and rescue the X-Men's loved ones.

Synopsis:
The X-Men, one by one, escape Doom's death traps and confront Doom himself. They free Storm, but her imprisonment has affected her mental stability and she unleashes the full extend of her weather powers. She eventually calms down and Arcade is release into their custody. Meanwhile, Scott and Lee are washed overboard and find themselves on a strange remote island with a mysterious city.

Synopsis:
Storm, Kitty, Jessica (Spider-Woman) Drew enjoy a Dazzler concert. Unfortunately, their evening is interupted by Caliban who gets the hots for Kitty. After a brief battle, they finally reason with Caliban, but he makes his escape.
Meanwhile, Scott and Lee explore the mysterious city and meet up with Magneto.

Jay's Notes:

  • Angel, frustrated over Wolverine's behavior, leaves the team.
  • First appearance of Caliban.
  • Sean (Banshee) Cassidy meets his daughter Theresa for the first time.

Synopsis:
Kitty stows away on an X-Men recon mission to search Magneto's abandoned Antarctic base. Unfortunately, it isn't deserted as Garokk attacks the X-Men. Fortunately, Kitty is able to help the X-Men defeat Garokk, who apparently falls to his death in a deep pit.


October 1981
Uncanny X-Men # 150: "I, Magneto ..."

Synopsis:
Magneto threatens to unleash his full powers on the Earth unless the leaders of the world surrender their political control to him. Unfortunately, the Soviets test Magneto resolve and he responds with deadly force. Fate (or plot) has the X-Men caught in the Bermuda Triangle and they're forced down near Magneto's base. The X-Men meet up with Cyclops and with Professor X's help confront Magneto. They battle it out until Kitty is injured and Magneto suddenly realizes the consequences of his actions and surrenders.
